Purpose: Physical properties were characterized to determine the exact data of the silicone hydrogel contact lenses available on the domestic market.
Method: The physical properties of the silicone hydrogel contact lens were measured for 25 products (7 companies) available on the domestic market. The gravimetric method was used for the measurement of water content, and the oxygen permeability (Dk) was measured by the polarographic method.
Result: Water content measured to be range of 33~48%, domestic products and foreign products appeared in similar ranges. But Oxygen transmissibility (Dk/t) of the silicone hydrogel contact lens available on the domestic market was measured to be in a average of 8.46¡¾ 1.14¡¿10-9(cm/mlO2)/(sec¡¿ml¡¿mmHg) and foreign market was measured to be in a average of 83.66¡¾4.63¡¿10-9(cm¡¿mlO2)/(sec¡¿ml¡¿mmHg). In addition, the oxygen transmissibility (Dk/t) was considerably different between the product.
Conclusions: Oxygen transmissibility (Dk/t) or physical properties were considerably different between the product of Silicone hydrogel contact lenses and thus, it is considered that the identification of exact data is needed for the wearers and opticians when they choose the silicone hydrogel lens.
